14-year-old cat spends over a decade living in a yard after her owner kicks her out, but she finally decides to trust the neighbor who never gave up on her: 'I am so happy I'm able to give her a comfortable retirement.'

Babycakes was adopted by my neighbor as a kitten, way too young. I believe she was four to six weeks old when they got her.
  • 07
She lived inside for the first year or so of her life and one of the things she liked to do was sleep in the bathroom sink.
  • 08
Unfortunately the sink had lever handles and one day Babycakes accidentally turned on the sink. She had also pressed the stopper mostly down so she ended up flooding the bathroom and the adjoining bedroom.
  • 09
Her owner was so mad she literally picked Babycakes up and threw her out of the house.
  • 10
She continue to feed her and take care of her but claimed she "didn't want to go back in the house" (can you blame her?
  • 11
#$!@ ) Luckily our condos have a very nice enclosed courtyard that Babycakes was safe in, and her owner had gone ahead and gotten her spayed.

But she never took her to the vet or treated her for fleas, and we live in South Louisiana where fleas are rampant.
  • 15
Babycakes seemed happy but she was pretty wild and you could barely pet her. After about three years her owner moved out and a family member who still lived here continued feeding her.
  • 16
At that time her owner tried to get me to take over her care but I told her I was already overwhelmed with my own four cats and two large dogs.
  • 17
Eventually one of the other neighbors begin working with Babycakes and got her much more friendly, but she would still only let a few people pet her and you had to be careful because when she was done she would swipe at you, claws out!

In 2020 the family member began having more health problems and I was in a better position financially so I took over caring for Babycakes.
  • 21
I finally got her into a vet, got her microchipped, got her vaccinations, and got her on flea meds.
  • 22
She got comfortable enough with me picking her up that I could bring her inside for inclement weather.
  • 23
In 2022 I had a shelter built for her and she absolutely loved it in winter.

If the temperatures were below 60 she pretty much stayed in it all the time, happily purring away.
  • 27
She still liked being able to explore in the courtyard and climb up the outside stairs to find patches of sun, but she was getting older and not as active.
  • 28
She also got much more receptive to pets and as long as I was watching that she didn't get overstimulated, she would be happy with me scratching her head indefinitely.

When I first started bringing her inside for bad weather she would mostly hide out, but after a few years she got more comfortable and would come out and climb on the bed and sometimes even snuggle up with me while I was sleeping.
  • 32
A month ago we had several spells of freezing weather so I brought her inside. Normally she would stay inside for a day or so after the weather improved, then either scratch at the back door or simply dart out when I opened it, but this time she showed no interest in going back out.
  • 33
I even closed off the room and left the door open for a couple of hours on a nice day and she just hid under the bed until I came back in and closed the door up.

It's now been a month, the temperature hasn't dropped below 50 in over a week, and she's still happy being an indoor cat.
  • 37
She's not crazy about the remaining three resident cats, but apparently she would rather deal with them than being outside again.
  • 38
She may end up changing her mind when summer comes, but in the meantime she is welcome to stay here as long as she wants.
  • 39
She had made friends with several of the neighbors and I let them know she was inside and while they miss her, they are happy that she is happy.
  • 40
She's now over 14 years old and while she still seems healthy, she's definitely slowed down and she spends most of her days napping.
  • 41
I have an ottoman at the foot of my bed with a baby bassinet on it and she has adopted that as her bed.
  • 42
She also loves sleeping in a box I acquired last month. When she was outside she had basically claimed a doormat that turned into her scratching/catnip mat and if she doesn't want to go back out in summer I'm going to bring that inside as well.
  • 43
She's mostly stayed in the back bedroom, and the resident cats avoided it for the first few weeks but now that they're going back in there she's also starting to explore the rest of the house.
  • 44
She may never be cuddle buddies with the current cats, but she is starting to be more comfortable when they are around.
  • 45
I am so happy I'm able to give her a comfortable retirement. When Summer comes she may decide to be an indoor/outdoor cat, but regardless I will always make sure she is fed, has vet care, has shelter, and of course get lots of pets and love!

I forgot to post the picture of her in her box. This was a box for a donut king cake and all the cats liked it, but she has claimed it and nobody wants to argue with her over it.
  • 48
Prestigious_Fox_7576 Haha awww I love it so cozy. she looks
  • 49
OP Hippy_Lynne I think they like that the corners are enclosed, or maybe that it smells like donuts. → Unfortunately king cakes are only sold during Carnival time so I won't be able to get another one until January 6th next year.

Shango-s_Daughter Thank you for all of the pictures, thank you for sharing her story, and thank you for loving Babycakes!
  • 51
OP Hippy_Lynne It has been wonderful watching her blossom. She literally purrs almost all the time, when I'm giving her treats, when I'm petting her, sometimes even while she's biting me because she's gotten enough pets.t

verapamil12 Thank you for sharing Babycakes's story. She's is adorable and she's lucky to have you. I'm sure her next many years will be happier and less stressful than the first 14.
  • 53
OP Hippy_Lynne She was pretty happy outside, especially once we tamed her a little and she could get pets more frequently. We have flower beds and landings she could climb, as well as her "fancy water fountain" (the 8-ft diameter fountain out by the pool. But she's getting older and I think the cold gets to her. She used to climb to the third floor to catch sun in Winter, and I noticed this year she wasn't doing that. I still think she might want to go back out on sunny days once it warms up, bu

ant_clip Babycakes is beautiful, thank you for being so patient. My former feral has zero interest in going back out.
  • 55
OP Hippy_Lynne She is so pretty! The crazy thing is when she was younger she was almost completely black, she only had the orange spot on her head. As she aged it's almost like the black covering her tabby "wore off" and more of the colors came through.
